숨겨진 목표를 달성하기 위하여 여론을 조작하는 개인이나 집단이 많아지고 있습니다. 정신차리지 않으면 이들에게 속아, 바둑판의 바둑돌이 되어버릴 수 있습니다. 이런 술수에 빠지지 않기 위해 제가 사용하는 방법 몇 가지를 소개합니다.
음모론을 주장하는 사람들을 저는 믿지 않습니다. 자신의 생각과 상치하는 정보는 무시하고, 자신이 믿고자 하는 것만을 믿는 성향이 있기 때문에, 이들의 판단은 신뢰할 수 없습니다.
토론할 때 상대방의 숨은 동기를 가정하거나, 개인 신상을 들추어 공격하는 사람들도 믿지 않습니다. 이들이 토론을 벌이는 이유는 진실을 찾기 위해서가 아니라 청중들을 선동하기 위해서라는 것이 분명하기 때문입니다.
남이 저질렀을 때 신랄하게 비난했던 행위를, 자신이 저질렀을 때에는 현란한 논리를 구사하여 변명하는 사람들도 믿지 않습니다. 이 사람들에게 논리란, 진실을 찾기 위한 도구가 아니라, 자신을 정당화하기 위한 기술에 지나지 않는다는 것이 명백하기 때문입니다.
강한 분개심를 일으키거나, 지나치게 감동을 주는 스토리도 믿지 않습니다. 검색 엔진을 통해 확인해보면, 왜곡되었거나 과장된 것을 자주 발견하기 때문입니다. 참고로, 설교자들은 전해 들은 감동적인 스토리를 강단에 말할 때, 사실 여부를 먼저 확인해야 합니다. 아니면 청중을 기만하는 것이 됩니다.
진리이신 예수님을 좇는 크리스천들은 왜곡된 정보, 거짓 정보 가운데 진실을 분별해내는 지혜를 습득해야 합니다. 그리고 진실이라면 아무리 불편해도 받아들이고, 진실이 아니라면 아무리 믿고 싶어도 거부해야 합니다.

Don’t Trust These People
Some people try to influence general public opinion with untruth and fake news in order to fulfill their hidden agenda. It’s very easy to be manipulated by them because they are skilled in what they do. There are standards I follow in order to not be deceived.
I do not trust conspiracy theorists. They only accept information that strengthens their belief and completely ignore information that contradicts it. People like this are incapable of having an objective view.
I don’t trust those who call out “hidden motives” or attack the private lives of their opponents. Obviously their goal is to smear their opponents to gain political advantage rather than seeking the truth.
I don’t trust those who criticize others’ actions then proceed to self-righteously rationalize when they engage in the same actions. They clearly use the power of reason to justify themselves over finding the truth.
I don’t believe extraordinary stories that either anger me or move me. More often than not, they are grossly exaggerated and far from truth.
Truth is important to Christians because our Lord is truth [John 14:6]. We should become wise and discerning to find truth amidst lies and falsehoods. We must accept truth even if it makes us uncomfortable, and we must reject untruth no matter how strongly we wish for it to be true.
